Naperville Park District

The Naperville Park District is a special taxing district that provides parks and recreational services to more than 140,000 residents. Since its inception, the Park District has grown from two to 136 parks and more than 7,500 recreational classes, teams, and events. CAPRA accreditation is one of its many achievements, and it continues to be a leader in fostering community and cultural engagement in the city. 50th anniversary

The State of the Naperville Park District address featured videos that detailed the history and accomplishments of the park district. The address also focused on what lies ahead for the district. Residents provided their thoughts on the future of the district. One resident, Marilyn Pallot, said that the future looks bright. She is proud to live in Naperville and volunteer her time to improve her community’s parks and recreational areas. Her speech was the 50th annual State of the Park District address.

The Naperville Park Police department is celebrating 50 years of service. This milestone will be celebrated at a special Board of Commissioners meeting on August 27, 2020, at the Fort Hill Activity Center, 20 Fort Hill Drive. During the meeting, Executive Director Ray McGury and Park Police Lt. Mike Harrington shared their memories of Bill Young, the first chief of the Park Police. Harrington worked closely with the Naperville Police Department during the 1970s.

CAPRA accreditation

The NRPA’s Commission on Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA) is the leading agency-level accreditation program in the nation. CAPRA accreditation is recognized as an indicator of high quality. It helps agencies achieve positive public recognition and accountability, and it strengthens staff teamwork and accountability. Accreditation ensures that parks and recreation programs meet national standards, which helps agencies to secure external funding and improve service quality.

The Naperville Park District is governed by a seven-member Board of Commissioners elected at-large by the Naperville community and serve four-year terms. The Park District has received CAPRA accreditation, which is given to less than one percent of park districts nationwide. The Park District has also been honored with numerous awards, including the National Gold Medal in 1972 and a prestigious Silver Medal in 2002.

In addition to parks, the community has 70 miles of trails, many of which offer loops for easy recreation. Some park locations also allow cycling, but this is prohibited in many parks. There are plenty of other ways to enjoy the area’s natural beauty. The Naperville Riverwalk is one of the best places to enjoy nature.

Fee assistance program

It has grown by more than 400 percent since 2008, when the COVID-19 pandemic shut down many of the park district’s activities. But despite the recent economic recession, participation in the program peaked last year and dropped dramatically in 2020. Now, however, the district is reaching out to the community and has reintroduced the program. In 2019, 457 residents received $53,000 in fee assistance. Last year, however, the shutdown of COVID-19 caused the program to be cut in half.

The Fee Assistance Program was originally known as the Scholarship Program. The foundation raises funds to pay for recreation programs and seasonal memberships. The fee assistance program helps low-income families enjoy recreation programs and activities at the park district. Many local restaurants also donate a portion of their proceeds to the foundation to support the program.
